(2 minute read)
Upon initial exam consulting with a new patient, and that’s about 55 times a month, I so often hear those graceful comforting familiar words, “ I hate you!“
My response usually with an up turned small, yet subtle smile and a chuckle, “Hmmmm Well … Why?……. I’m a nice guy. I think you hate what I do, right?”. Their response, generally the same.”Oh yes, that’s what I meant“.
That’s the conversation starter. Thank goodness I don’t take things too personally,
Most people hate coming to the dentist. It’s uncomfortable and un-natural to lay there. A total stranger, like myself invading personal space twelve inches- face to face. One can feel vulnerable almost bound there, confined and defenseless and for some, torturous. Maybe, there is even a sense of squeezing pressure on the Limbic System (the primordial aspect of the human brain). The brain screeching, ” I want to get out of this crazy space….” It gets better……Then, I have got the “nerve” to violate with sharp pointy things, picking and scraping on the most sensitive regions in your mouth.
What is up with that?????? That’s my every day. Welcome to my reality.
Don’t worry. I will communicate to dismantle your fears and generate a plan of optimal dental health taking into consideration your past dental experiences. That’s actually what I love most about my job. The dentistry is pretty simple. It’s the human I am trying to unwrap and understand. That’s the challenge. I will always try to make the genuine connection with you. It’s the real you that I am trying to connect to, so that I may deliver the best dentistry and ultimately the best dental health. Through comfortable relaxed communication we can gain a common affinity for each other resulting in a chill environment. Understanding your fears, anxiety and past dental experiences will drive me to deliver your best dental health thru great communication and connecting with you.
It’s always a big treat when I hear from patients,
“Doc, I love coming here”.
